If you use the regular internal Exchange Server, you will have to specify the URL. Cloud Outlook 365 users don’t need to configure anything on DavMail, the Exchange Web Services URL is preset right out of the box. The program pulls only a few dependencies: any open or ajar hypostasis jdk/jre will do just fine. Note that development is being done on SourceForge, and a few days ago a new version of DavMail 4.8 was released. We have a solution to this problem by using the utility dpkg and a deb package for Debian. Additionally we need DavMailmail gateway, which unfortunately is not included in the standard Gentoo Linux repositories. Yellowish fill color indicates Kontact components that interact with the mail server.Īs you already know, this method uses KDE as desktop environment together with the KDEPIM package. Let’s start with the hard part: setting up a work email with kdepim / kontact / kmail To fully replace MS Outlook.

The second provides no more than half of the required functionality, but is much easier to install and to use. At various times I have used for this purpose KMail/Kontact and Thunerbird Let me say right away that the first one has almost completely replaced MS Outlook. Kontact heldįor a dozen years I have had the opportunity to test Linux mail programs as an Exchange Server client. How do you configure your mail properly so that everything works with Exchange Server: mail, calendar, address book, working with folders? I am writing an article about this. Speaking of mail, what’s wrong with it? In those organizations that use Exchange Server, you get events on the calendar all the time and it’s kind of embarrassing to justify that your mailer doesn’t communicate with the calendar and you don’t use Outlook because you don’t have it on Linux.

This is improved in Thunderbird 3, which went into its fourth beta release a few days ago. When you work in a large company where the workstations are mostly Windows and you are one of the few Linux users, you spend a certain amount of your effort overcoming resistance to an unfriendly IT environment.Over the years, some problems remain in the past, but new ones appear. For example, sites flooded only with IE have almost disappeared as a class. There are fewer and fewer scary docx, xlsx files come in the mail.Somewhere disappeared mandatory for all miracle-yudo programs, which are written only for Windows. Now almost everything can be opened and edited from a web browser. Many things have changed, but not everything. This solution seems to work OK, but I noticed some issues with the HTML email editor. I did, however, run into a defect and workaround installing Lightning. Lightning and DavMail are downloaded and installed the same way as on Windows. Having proven this configuration under Windows I installed Ubuntu in a VM and used Synaptic to install Thunderbird. I took this home and it worked as expected: I could send and receive mails and had a limited address book.

To work around not having the Exchange address book offline I installed Email Address Crawler which instantly scooped every to or from address from my existing mails into an address book.
This is supposed to be fixed in a later release. Trying to replicate the directory for offline access did not work for me, however. With the address book available autocompletion works also. Instead I configured a Thunderbird address book to directly access Active Directory, which works only locally on the LAN.

I couldn’t figure out how to use DavMail LDAP, the documentation is too cryptic. To configure CalDAV I specified a CalDAV location of /calendar To configure SMTP for outgoing mail I specified localhost port 1025, not 25.
To configure IMAP in Thunderbird all I had to do was specify a server name of localhost and port of 1143, not 143. DavMail setup is straightforward, following the instructions on it’s website, all I had to provide was the OWA URL. Thunderbird installation is straightforward, Lightning is installed from Thunderbird’s ‘Tools/Add-ons’ menu.ĭavMail is an Exchange gateway that wraps standard protocols like IMAP around the proprietary interfaces to Exchange.
Lightning will be integrated into Thunderbird 3. Thunderbird is a cross platform email client, Lightning is a calendering add-on.
